R. AUSTIN FREEMAN
Richard Austin Freeman (1862 - 1943) was a popular English author of novels and short stories featuring the fictional character Dr. (John) Thorndyke, a pathologist-detective. Freeman was educated as a physician and surgeon and practiced in the Gold Coast of Africa (now Ghana), where he caught a fever. In 1904 he was forced by poor health to retire from practice and began to writing fiction. He published his first of many Dr. Thorndyke novels in 1907.
